MARINE ENGINES 4 LESS TECHNICAL TIPS & FAQ

Our team at Marine Engines 4 Less wants you to love your marine engine purchase from us. It is time consuming, costly, and inconvenient for there to be a mechanical issue with your engine, especially when it is preventable. We have found that, over the years, we are asked several questions about inboard marine engines. Questions about the installation process, maintenance, break in procedure, and technical advice are answered often by our technical support team. Below is some information on some of this material that you will find helpful when purchasing, installing, and maintaining a marine engine sold and produced by Marine Engines 4 Less.

Q. HOW CAN I BE SURE THAT I AM PURCHASING THE CORRECT ENGINE?

In most cases, you’ll want to replace your engine with the exact engine that you are using in your boat now. This is the easiest and most assured way that you will be back on the water quickly and run into the least amount of issues when doing an engine swap. You will find that our sales team will ask for the following information when you are ordering and engine from us:

  • The year of your boat.
  • What type of engine you are using. Typically in cubic inch (i.e. 4.3L or 5.7L)
  • Your engine’s serial number. This is provided by the manufacturer (i.e. Mercruiser or Volvo Penta). Serial numbers for Mercruiser are formatted similarly to 0M123456 or 1A123456. A Volvo Penta serial number will begin with the number 4 and are formatted similarly to 4012558945
  • Your engine’s serial number. This is provided by the manufacturer (i.e. Mercruiser or Volvo Penta). Serial numbers for Mercruiser are formatted similarly to 0M123456 or 1A123456. A Volvo Penta serial number will begin with the number 4 and are formatted similarly to 4012558945
  • insert picture of engine block and cylinder head casting number

While these questions may take some time and research to answer, you’ll be happy that you did. In the long run, this will prevent the wrong engine from being sent and save you time and expenses that can occur from having to swap for the correct engine.

Q. WHAT WARRANTY IS PROVIDED WITH MY ENGINE AND HOW DOES THE WARRANTY PROCESS WORK?

All of our remanufactured and new engines come with a 1 year parts and labor warranty. This warranty can be found in writing here.

It is important that, should you have an issue with an engine sold to you by Marine Engines 4 less, that you first contact us. Our email warranty@marineengines4less.com or phone 1-888-364-4537 are the best methods of contact for a potential warranty concern.

Do not disassemble any portion of the engine provided assembled by Marine Engines 4 Less. This, not only, makes it nearly impossible to diagnose cause of failure, but it will also result in a denied claim.

Q. WHAT WARRANTY IS PROVIDED ON PARTS AND ACCESSORIES?

All of our parts and accessories, minus electronic components, that we provide come with, at least, a 1 year limited warranty. This depends on the manufacturer, however, on each product’s page there will be details about the warranty. Parts and accessories do not come with a labor warranty.

Q. WHAT DIFFERENTIATES A MARINE ENGINES 4 LESS ENGINE VERSUS THE COMPETITION?

We produce our engines in our own manufacturing facility. This leads to many benefits for the end user, including: competitive pricing, expert customer service and technical support, quality parts and precision machining, and knowledgeable production staff.

Unlike most of our competitors, we provide our engines at competitive pricing direct to you - the consumer. Instead of purchasing engines in bulk from a large engine producer and having to mark them up, we build our own engines from start to finish cutting out any middle men. This allows us to undercut the competition on in-house produced new and remanufactured units. By producing our own engines this allows us to provide you with much better customer service and technical support than the competition. From telling you exactly where in the production process your engine is to explaining how to time an engine over the telephone, our team members are here to help you in the engine replacement process.

And finally, our production team is small (about 15 people in total) which guarantees that you are getting an engine that is built with the knowledge that is required to produce a quality and trustworthy engine. We aren’t a mass engine producer, and we pride ourselves on that fact. Quality over quantity is a strong component of our mission statement.

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

Q. MARINE ENGINES 4 LESS PROVIDES ONLY REMANUFACTURED MARINE ENGINES. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A REMANUFACTURED AND REBUILT ENGINE?

Rebuilt Engines: To recondition by cleaning, inspecting and replacing severely worn or broken parts. Serviceable parts are reused within the manufacturer's acceptable wear limits.

Remanufactured Engines: To make as close to new as possible. Wearable parts are automatically replaced. All core material is closely inspected and checked against original equipment specifications for correct dimensional tolerances. Replacement parts are new and made in the same production process as original equipment.

Testing is performed to manufacturer specifications and original production standards. Choose for yourself, but know that Marine Engines 4 Less will only provide completely remanufactured engines — or any of our other remanufactured components — and that you can drive away from your technician's shop with confidence if you have an Marine Engines 4 Less engine in your Boat.

Q. HOW CAN I BE SURE THAT THE ENGINE PROVIDED IS A MARINE UNIT?

While similar, marine engines are a completely different animal than automotive engines. Marine engines use stainless steel fire ring head gaskets, brass or stainless steel freeze plugs, hypereutectic (where available) pistons, and, most importantly, a high torque marine camshaft.

The most important difference is the camshaft and the torque that it provides. Think about it. When you drive your car down the highway, you’re consistently between 1000-2000 RPM’s, but in a boat, you need to be at higher RPM’s for almost all of the time that you’re using it. An engine with an automotive camshaft won’t produce enough torque to get you up on plane as consistently as needed. Don’t buy a junkyard motor and put it in your boat.
